I ventured up the garden to see what I could find in flower to cut for my empty vase. It’s a beautiful sunny morning here and to my surprise and delight I spotted the first camellia flower of the year. I was then faced with a dilemma – to cut or not to cut! There were three blooms and lots of healthy looking buds so I decided to go for it.
This is Camellia x japonica ‘Bonomiana’ which is described as an ‘antique’ variety – having been introduced before 1900. Of the three blooms, two were pale pink with just-discernable darker streaks and one was dark pink with pale streaks.
And here is the one I chose for my desk.
The National Camellia Collection is in Cornwall at Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park.
Have a good week.
