Inspired by my artworks using a map of southern Ireland, I have been turning a map of France into drum lampshades.

I have appliqued the map with plant-fibre papers in a design prompted by the symbol for a town on the N-roads.  When illuminated the needle holes make tracks rather like boundary markings.

Here are two more in progress.

I’ll be showcasing these new lampshades next week when Five Get Creative in Ledbury.   I think they’d look great in a home office.

I’m excited by these new shades, I can imagine making them to commission incorporating maps that mean something to the recipient. Perhaps as a 21st birthday present with a map of their home town, as a wedding present using a map showing the place of marriage, as a christening present showing the town of birth or even as a house-warming present using foreign maps showing favourite places where the recipient has travelled before setting-up home?  Ooh, what fun, the list is endless!

Which map would you like to see made into a lampshade and why?
