I really enjoyed doing my Bloom of the Week feature back in 2008 and so thought I’d start it again for 2010 (click on it in the category list in the side bar if you’d like to see past posts). The idea was inspired by my New Year’s resolution of that year to keep fresh flowers on my desk each week.  It also prompted me to take a walk round my garden with my camera on a regular basis to see what was in bloom.

As I trudged through the remains of the snow earlier this week I struggled to find anything in bloom, until I remembered a rare moment of forward planning back in the autumn.  As I was planting up tubs of bulbs last October I thought to save a handful for a small pot which I could bring indoors.  And here it is – within just a couple of days of being brought indoors two little crocus buds have emerged.

I can’t tell you how good it feels to have them sitting beside me on my desk on a grey January day.

The RHS holds a National Plant Collection of Crocus at Wisley and the mail order company Crocus has a lovely website with lots of useful information for gardeners.
